Filtration is the process of separating solids from liquids or gases through physical, biological, and mechanical operations. The process uses a filter medium to remove the fluid, which can pass through, from the solid particles. The solid particles that is removed from the fluid or clarified fluid itself may be the desired product. The basic requirements of a filtration system include the filter medium, the fluid that contains suspended solids, a mechanical device that holds the filter medium and permits an application of force, and a force to drive the fluid through the system, which may include a pressure difference. Lab filters include bottle top filter systems, syringe filters, vacuum filtration systems, and membrane filters.
